Gates FOUNDATION GENDER MARKER
PRINCIPAL UX/UI DESIGNER AND LEAD RESEARCHER
BACKGROUND AND OPPORTUNITY
The Gates Foundation uses the Gender Integration Marker to assess the level of gender integration within the design of an investment according to the gender integration criteria.
This tool is a key enabler to realize the foundation’s vision of becoming a gender intentional organization by strategically applying an intersectional gender lens across its programmatic investments, strategies, and key operational functions in order to catalyze impact in the field.
However, internal users of the tool expressed a desire to capture this data digitally within their proprietary Investment Management Software, INVEST.
The challenge: build an in-system version of the tool that integrated with business-intelligence systems so that the data could be parsed and used for various business cases.
Qualitative Design Research
We held multiple focus groups with three user groups, as well as stakeholder interviews to acquire multiple data points collected in Excel and MURAL, after which we analyzed to identify affinities and key functional requirements for the software design team.
Software System Flow Design
The marker required 21 UI screens with advanced logic. This is a diagram of each branch.
